Ophelia`s flat

Patricia took a small sip of her coffee as she listened to Faustus' description of her daughter, finding it a bit easier to hide her distaste with a cup up to her mouth. She lowered it and set it back down on the table before looking back up at Faustus and nodding, "Yes, that's correct." She was not particularly fond of the fact that her daughter had met Faustus, had actually had sexual intercourse with him (although, Patricia really wasn't blaming her daughter on that front because Faustus was really attractive) and apparently had some trouble with debt.

She was having a hard time believing that Christina would share so much information with a man she had simply man. She had it from Jonathan that she actually met most men in some sort of bar type setting? Right before conning them out of their money or something resembling that. She wasn't likely to bring anyone home with her...or maybe she was. She didn't know her daughter, nor did she pretend to but there were a few basic things she did know. And...that was curious.

Even still, it looked like whatever interaction there had been between the two of them seemed to be over and temporary. Patricia was content with that. "No, she does not know about me, or her brother," the unspoken 'I'd prefer it'd stay that way' was in the air, of that she made sure. She turned her head as Jonathan proclaimed to be leaving and hugged him, kissing his cheek and then whispering, "Visite moi plus tard," directly into his ear. She smiled at him as he agreed to do so with a nod of his head.

After Jonathan had left, Patricia turned her attention back to Faustus and said, "Well, you know how to clear out a room."

A smirk grew on Faustus face as he looked at Jonathan. He was rather amused by his ability to control himself. Something Faustus lacked tragically in. With the same smirk he watched how the man got up, kissing his mother and… for a moment his smirk disappeared as he kissed Ophelia. Whatever their relationship was, he really didn`t want to see it expanding. If anything he wanted that man further away from his mother. He was a Death Eater and you can never trust one. So when Jonathan spoke to Faustus, he didn`t show any kind of a reaction for few moments. Eventually he nodded. ”Indeed we will.” he said, getting the grin back on his face.

But his grin wasn`t so sincere anymore. It was rather concerned as he looked back at Patricia. You can never know what that DE will come up with and if he will go to see Tina… everything might just go downhill. It was such a shame, but he never found out about the relationship between her and her brother. If she tells him, he was sure that soon enough both Patricia and Ophelia will know and that was something he`d rather avoid.

”Well, that is certainly good news… for a moment there I was scared that I got fooled by some girl.” he spoke carelessly as he downed his drink. He was eager to leave, find Tina and talk with her about it. ”And… I don`t mind if there is one Death Eater less in the room.”

Patricia chuckled humorlessly at his choice of words. Right, 'good' wasn't exactly the adjective she herself would have chosen to describe the fact that she and Jonathan were lying to Christina to protect her. That most of what she knew about her family was a lie. Right, 'good news' wasn't nearly indicative enough of what that was. It was more of a necessary evil. Patricia and Jonathan had both chosen paths that differed from the norm and for that there were consequences. Not being able to know her daughter was one of them, but if it meant that she was allowed to have a relatively normal life then it was worth it.

She was also chuckling at the fact that she didn't doubt Christina's ability to fool anyone. Nevertheless, she kept her mouth shut on that matter. Who was she to speak about her own daughter when she had only spent a few months with her as a newborn baby? A stranger, really. She was also an equal stranger when it came to the man sitting in front of her, so she couldn't doubt his ability to not be fooled either. Silence was really the best option.

Turning to Ophelia, but addressing both, she asked, "Would you like me to leave? I'm sure you two would like to catch up." As far as she was concerned, she felt like she had overstayed her welcome.

With Patricia obviously thinking of leaving things got pretty bad. Faustus was sure that he wasn`t ready to talk to his mother about everything. She would catch him lying and then everything would get completely ruined. Neither him, nor Tina were ready for this, he was sure. Somehow they were still ‘secret’ and there were only few people knowing about them being together. He thought it would be only proper to have it like that for a little bit longer.

Therefore at Patricia`s words he smiled. ”Yeah, there is a lot and I would love to stay and talk, but I should go as well.” He spoke suddenly, not looking at his mother, but at Patricia instead. It was easier to lie that way. ”I`ve had been incredibly busy the last couple of months and I believe that I`m still going to be that for longer. Sad, actually.” He stood up, walked over his mother and kissed her on the cheek. ”I promise to see you as soon as possible.” He didn`t even give her a chance to protest as he turned to Patricia once more.

”May I escort you to the door? I`m sure my mother has a lot of Death Eater duties.” He smirked, knowing full well that her only duty was to stay there and don`t get into trouble. Be there just in case. With the same smirk, he stretched his hand out to Tina`s mother, his smirk changing into a rather charming smile. This day didn`t have to end into a disaster… yet.

Ophelia was just about to answer to Patricia that she indeed had a lot to talk about with her son when Faustus suddenly spoke. He wasn`t looking at her, instead he was staring at her friend and she knew that look. That look made her frown lightly. Was he serious? He popped in for only a couple of minutes and was ready to leave, simply because the situation had turned to him having to be alone with her? By that moment she was sure that he was hiding something.

”Oh, but Faustus-“ That was all she got to say, when he spoke again, kissing her by the cheek. Ophelia probably would have started yelling at him, if not Patricia being in the same room. She didn`t want to spoil the image of the perfect son that she had portrayed to her friend. She told stories of how loving and amazing he was. Now he was practically throwing that all right out the window.

Sourly she smiled, standing up as well. ”Yes, in fact I have some quite important stuff to do. Thank you for reminding me, dear.” she spoke, smiling, but she had never been good at hiding emotions. Irritation was clear on her face. And the stuff she had to do was actually to find Emily and talk to her. Find out what was he hiding from her.

Patricia took in the whole interaction between Ophelia and Faustus with a slightly raised eyebrow. Well, it could hardly be called an interaction really because it was more Faustus taking complete control of the situation and basically ordering his own mother to not talk to him. She could understand why she herself, personally, would not have responded to that if it was with her own son seeing as how he could instantly use the "you haven't been a crucial part of my life/you have no right" argument, but if she were Ophelia she would have immediately taken some control. Of course, she wasn't Ophelia, so in reality, the prospect of being 'escorted out' seemed...quite promising.

"I would be delighted," she answered Faustus after taking a brief look at Ophelia and noticing her irritation. She didn't know really how to act but she knew that she at least wanted to get out of that flat. It was too awkward too remain, that was certain. She took his hand, standing up too. Who would have ever thought Christina would wind up having the same taste in men? Well, when it came to physical matters at least.

Faustus really tried his best not to look at his mother. He knew he was being completely awful to her that moment, but there was no other way. She simply couldn`t know and if hiding Tina meant having to apologize to his mother later on, he was sure it was a rather low price to pay. Smiling at Patricia he walked to the door, getting her coat and helping her to put it on. ”Mother, I`m going to visit soon. There are some things I need to discuss with you.” This time he did look at her. This time he was being honest.

After that he turned back to Patricia. ”Where are you going?” he wondered, crooking his head to one side, ”Because I`d be honored if I got the chance to drop you off.” It was weird that he was that attracted to her. On the other hand, he had never had a woman that would be older than him. Well, physically. Therefore, he was also interested.

Her being Tina`s mother only added up to everything. This was a weird need that he had to fulfill, because he knew how he got if he wanted something but failed to get it. It would usually become his obsession and that was not what he needed that moment.

Patricia enjoyed being pleasantly surprised on a day-to-day basis. In all actuality, she probably enjoyed being unpleasantly surprised as well. It kept life interesting, and she absolutely loathed being bored. She had countless amounts of rather volatile experiences due to her actively searching for a way to entertain herself. She had found entertainment alright, just not exactly of the positive connotation. But the fact that Faustus was being somewhat chivalrous, at least for now, was one of those pleasant surprises. She put on her coat with his help, releasing her hair when it was pinned down by the coat and muttering a small 'thanks'.

She was a bit relieved when Faustus told Ophelia he would visit her soon. She knew her friend wasn't exactly thrilled at how the visit had turned out, and she also knew how much Ophelia had missed her son, but really, her motherly instinct stopped working as soon as Jonathan had been out the door. She was now back to how she normally acted most of the time: making sure to take care of number one, herself.

"I was going to go back to my flat to freshen up." She answered quite normally, not bothering to tie the coat together at the front seeing as how she was going to be disapparating. With a small grin, she turned back to him and asked "So, if your offer still stands, are you ready to go?" On his agreement, Patricia nodded and waved goodbye to Ophelia before apparating them out.

Scotland. Ophelia wondered if she`d ever be able to get back to London. She knew that Faustus wanted her ‘safe’ and that the Dark lord needed her to run some errands now and then, but she missed the town. She missed the buzz, the people, the Diagon Alley and being able to see her son more often. Lately he hardly ever came round and each and single time he did, she knew he was hiding something from her. But prying was worthless, she knew, so she didn`t even try. She just let the things flow, waiting for them to unwrap themselves.

After murmuring few safety spells (she was not a fan of people apparating into her living room) she took off her coat and hung it by the door. One thing she liked about Scotland was the ability to walk around in broad daylight. People were too concerned about their own problems to notice her. However, the moment she closed the door behind herself, she knew something was wrong. Frowning slightly and tilting her head to one side she moved to the living room. ”Hello?” She asked out loud squeezing her wand.

”You know, if you are here, you probably know who I am and… you must know I`m not a very pleasant person to intruders.” Her voice didn`t tremble as she looked carefully around the living room and moved to the kitchen. There lay the answer to her questions. Or more like stood in a form of a black raven, watching her from the table. Ophelia smiled and lowered her wand.

”Hello, Thomus.” She exclaimed, walking past the table and to the cupboard. ”I`ve been waiting for you to show up. Long time no see, eh?” She spoke and then smirked while taking out two cups. ”Black coffee, as usual?” That wasn`t actually a question, for she had already taken the coffee out. ”You should lose those feathers now – it`s hard to talk with a bird.”

Thomus had been standing on the table for quite a while. He waited patiently, his eyes stabbed at the door. It wasn`t that easy to find her, because he would have never thought that she`d go off to Scotland. He never saw her as the running type. Even when he had the address, he couldn`t be sure if it was really her flat, so, he waited, ready to flee the moment he finds out he was wrong.

But he wasn`t, and was proven of it the moment she entered the kitchen. Thomus watched her, his black eyes following her every movement. Finding her was one thing, now he had to make sure that she didn`t hold any grudges. But as Ophelia lowered her wand and went for the cupboard, he knew they were fine. Flying up into the air he began transforming and a moment after was sitting on the chair in his true form. ”It`s nice to see you.” That was completely true.

”And yes, black coffee. I`m surprised you remember.” He smiled, watching her back. She didn`t really fit in the flat, or so he felt. But he was going to keep his thoughts to himself. ”You know, the spells you put up aren`t working that well. I opened the window from the street, flew in, landed here, closed the window and… nothing. You should work on that.”

Drumming his fingers against the surface he waited in silence, thinking things over. He had to approach the matter the right way, or she`d never go for it. He knew her and that was his greatest advantage. ”However, this is not just some friendly visit. I came here for a reason.”

Ophelia was more than curious. She couldn`t wait to here why Thomus was here, but decided to wait and pretend like it didn`t matter. That wouldn`t give him the opportunity to tease her, which she knew he loved to do. Taking out few cups she tapped her wand at the kettle and put some coffee in the mugs. Now all she had to do was wait for it to boil. Turning around she faced him at last.

”You… look different.” She exclaimed, watching him closely. He looked older, if anything. It was understandable, though. The last time she had seen him was ages ago. Other than that, he looked better than most of the time. Laying off the service to the Dark Lord worked wonders for him. Hearing the complaints about her security system she shrugged. ”It was made to keep magic being out, not a random bird.’ She joked, smiling briefly.

Hearing the water boil she turned around and waving her wand at the kettle watched how it flew into the air and towards the mugs. It poured the water and then went back to it`s previous position, at the same time as Thomus spoke up again. ”Of course you didn`t.” Ophelia picked up the mugs and walked to the table, putting on in front of Thomus and rising up the other to her lips. ”So what is it then?”

”Point taken.” Thomus laughed to himself. True. Wizards tended to ignore the things that weren`t done by magic and transforming into an animal pushed things away from magic, but towards nature. So, for a witch not to think about such detail was not only okay, but even normal. He realized that some wizards and witches relied too much on magic – him included. Putting his hands around the coffee mug he smiled to himself – no sugar. Damn, she had a great memory.

At Ophelia`s question, Thom sighed and leaned back in his chair. He wasn`t sure how to approach the matter and how to convince her to do as he asked. On the other hand, he had some things up on his sleeve that she just couldn`t say no. ”You see… a family member has gone missing. Not really missing, she`s probably hiding, but you get my point.” Ophelia knew the ‘family member’ and hated her. That was where it could nasty.

”And while I could try to find her, she could catch onto it. Get suspicious. Hide somewhere else. That could go on and on and on and quite frankly I’m not up for it.” Taking the cup he took a sip, breathed out and placed it back down. Few moments of silence was enough for him to get his thoughts straight. ”That`s why I want your son to track her down. Not… hurt her, scare her, or kill her, for Merlin`s sake, but just track her down, find out where she is. I`ll take care of everything else.” He said calmly. ”You probably already know who I am talking about.” And then he got ready for an explosion.

Ophelia thought about the reasons of what could he be doing there. One was the most obvious – he needed help with something. That would be understandable, because she knew she could do him a favor just like he could do her one. So, that was possible. Then maybe he came there to deliver her some news. That meant those were bad news, for who would show up few years later just to talk about good things? And after that, she was blank. So, she rather impatiently waited for hi to spill the beans while sipping her coffee.

However, as he began speaking, she knew she wasn`t going to like it. A family member? That alone spoke trouble. And the more she heard, the more she felt like he shouldn’t even bother, for she`d never agree to whatever he wanted from her. That was when Faustus got involved and she just shook her head. ”No ~censored~ way!” She exclaimed, shaking her head and placing the mug on the table. Turning around she walked back to the counter and put her hands on it, thinking.

”Of course I know who you are talking about! The ~censored~ ruined my marriage!” She suddenly hissed, quickly turning around to glare at him. Monica Grant. The one and only. Ophelia had encountered the woman far too many times, not to know who she was. Even the idea that Thomus thought that Ophelia would agree to it was ridiculous. ”Give me at least one reason why should I even do as much as consider asking my son to do it?”

Thomus knew so. He knew so from the very beginning – Ophelia wasn`t going to go for it. But it didn`t hurt trying, right? He watched her back, already knowing that she`d say no. Well, he didn`t blame her. Monica and Ophelia had never been big friends or anything. He chose not to comment on her words, but instead just answer the question. Now it was time to pull out what he had in his sleeve – for quite a while now. Thank Merlin for good communications.

”Actually, the reason why you should do so, contains both your failed marriage and your son.” He started off slow. For her to agree to do what he asked, also meant having to do an impression. And while his words were going to do so any way or other, he just had to reach for the maximum effect. ”Let`s face it, Monica had nothing to do with your marriage failing. You know the reason why it did and I`m not going to blame you for it.” Ophelia didn`t work as a person committed to someone. She was a free spirit and sleeping around was natural to her. Her marriage was never supposed to work.

Thomus was also very aware of the fact that she wasn`t very patient and wouldn`t stand there calmly while he trashed her, so he tried to get everything out quickly. ”And, well, not that I blame you for that too, but the story you told your son is a total bluff. You probably don`t want to find out how he`d react if he knew that all this time he had been lied to by his own mother…” speaking in a calm tone he reached for the cup, but stopped in the midway, deciding to leave his hands free. Just in case if it would be a little bit too much for Ophelia and she`d decide to deal with it in a Death Eater way.

He watched her in silence, knowing that his last words won`t go by unnoticed. ”Your son contacted him. And he`s coming to London.” Now all he had to do was lean back and wait.

It seemed pathetic to Ophelia that Thomus really thought that she was going to help. She really wished nothing less but death to the woman, so why should she ask her son to find where she is, just for the sake of it? And she highly doubted that any reason Thom would have would be any good. Now when he started speaking, her eyes narrowed. He should have realized already that her marriage was not a topic she`d be merry about. So was the topic of her lying to her son.

”I really hope you are going somewhere with this.” She spoke in a low and cold voice, watching him. She had always felt awful for lying to Faustus. She felt awful that her lie was what made him into the person he was. Hateful, cold, soulless, even. But it was too late to tell him the truth, so she just let him carry on with all those murders, with gaining himself a title of a heartless human being. The only thing she had wanted for Faustus, was to join the Death Eaters, to fight for something worth fighting. Instead he turned around and became everything she was afraid of deep inside. For few months she couldn`t see the person his son used to be.

But lately things had changed. He got over the mindless hater he felt for his father, he settled. His name wasn`t in the papers anymore and she could relax knowing that he wasn`t going to be arrested any minute. Ophelia hated herself for lying. But what could she possibly do? Faustus would hate her if he knew the truth.

And that was exactly why Thomus` last words had her completely frozen in one spot, a look of shock all over her face. She stared at her ex-lover, her eyes wide, her mouth open, her heart beating quickly against her ribs. ’What?” She murmured, shaking her head and moving towards the table. Pulling one chair she plopped down at it and stabbed her look at her hands. ”No, it`s… no…” The murmurs continued after she cleared her throat. All that time she kept shaking her head. It couldn`t be truth. It didn`t make sense. It was one big mistake.

Slowly looking up at Thom she blinked few times. ”But why? And how the hell do you know this? And… its not possible. Faustus would never contact Balthazar. He hates him. It`s just…” If that happened, if Faustus really talked to Balthazar, Ophelia`s whole world would fall. She only cared about her son and no one else. And it would break him if he knew the truth. It would also end their relationship. He`d hate her. Running her hands down her face she took a deep breath, trying to calm down.

”Even so… that…. That still doesn`t explain why should I help you…” It was just a failing attempt to believe that it wasn`t happening.

There it was. Exactly the reaction Thomus had been waiting for. The total shock and denial. He didn`t expect anything else. This was Ophelia, never thinking about consequences and things that her actions might bring. That was what he liked about her, but it also was something that was going to screw her up sooner or later. With Balthazar on the way it most likely meant sooner.

He waited patiently for her to ask something that would make sense. And the whole time he kept fighting back the small smile from coming on his lips. He was just amused by the situation. ”Let`s just say that I have my own source of information. It just happens that tat source had recently been acquainted with Balthazar and… here I am.” he tilted his head, watching her trying to recover from the shock. He got her good, didn`t he? ”As for why? I can`t tell you. Even my information doesn`t go that far.”

After that he just waited for her to ask the main question – what could he change? The question that would allow Thom to ask favors from her. When it came, he smiled, stood up and walked to the window, looking out. Now he was in the control of the situation. ”You see, here`s the thing – I can`t go after my sister and you obviously can`t and won`t go after Balthazar to stop him from seeing your son.” It was basic logic. Ophelia wouldn`t risk seeing Balthazar and breaking down. She had too much pride.

”So, here is my offer – you ask your son to track down my sister and I stop your ex-husband from destroying your son. A win-win situation.” He grinned at her.
